What is the difference between an ITIN and an SSN — and do I need either?

An SSN is issued to US citizens and residents authorised to work in the US. An ITIN is a tax processing number for people who have a US filing obligation but are not eligible for an SSN. As a non-resident founder you will almost certainly never qualify for an SSN, and that is completely fine.

You do not need either one to form a US LLC or to get an EIN. That surprises most people, and it is the biggest misconception we correct.

An ITIN becomes useful later, in specific situations: certain personal US tax filings, some tax-treaty benefits, and a traditional banks and platforms that ask for one during verification. It is included in our Business plan.
